Ski resorts in the French Alps

Want to go skiing in the Alps? Not sure which destination to choose? This article is for you!

I'm sharing three destinations with you to help you make your choice: Les Arcs 2000, Les Saisies and Avoriaz.

Note: I booked all three through the Sunweb website. Their rates include accommodation, equipment rental and lift passes.

Les Arcs 2000

Ski resort:

The Savoie ski resort of Les Arcs includes 5 sites at different altitudes: Arc 2000, Arc 1950, Arc 1800, Arc 1600 and Bourg-Saint-Maurice.
Staying at Arc 2000 means staying at the very top of the resort, with is magnificent snow-covered scenery.

Skiing area:

  • "Paradiski" with 258 ski slopes

  • See the slopes map

  • Highest point: 3250m altitude.

Accommodation recommendation: Chalet des neiges Résidence cime des arcs - Arc 2000.

  • Classic and clean apartments

  • Balcony view of the slopes

  • Heated pool and sauna

  • At the foot of the slopes

  • In the heart of the resort

Restaurants recommended:

  • Le refuge: Savoyard fondue. Mountain chalet atmosphere with wooden furniture and plaids.

  • Le savoy: authentic raclette with appliance.

  • La bergerie: high-altitude chalet in La Plagne. Perfect for a lunch on a sunny terrace in the middle of the slopes.

👉 My opinion: Les Arcs 2000 is a resort for intermediate or confirmed skiers. The pistes can be quite narrow and therefore difficult for beginners.
Because of its altitude, you won't see many fir trees, but the snow cover is optimal.

Les Saisies

Ski resort:

A village resort at human scale. Breathtaking scenery and views of the surrounding mountains and Mont Blanc.
Located 40 minutes from Albertville, easily accessible by train or car.

Skiing area:

  • "Espace diamant" connecting 6 ski resorts with 159 ski slopes

  • See the slopes map

  • Highest point: 1650m altitude.

Accommodation recommendation: Le chalet des Cîmes.

  • Renovated apartments

  • Wellness area with swimming pool

  • Ski loker

  • At the foot of the slopes

  • 300m from the resort center

Restaurants recommended:

  • L'Ecoelle: Savoyard specialities with great service. Terrace with outdoor fire pit.

  • La Maison: everything is homemade: from the pasta to the french fries!

  • Le Signal: For a drink and a game of pool.

👉 My opinion: Les Saisies is an excellent family resort. Many activities are available: tobogganing, snowshoeing, etc. There are lots of trees everywhere, which makes for magnificent scenery when you're skiing.
In my opinion, this is the best resort for beginners.

Avoriaz

Ski resort:

100% pedestrian-only resort, traffic by foot, ski, toboggan or horse-drawn carriage. Parking outside the resort, caterpillar cab service to your accommodation.

Skiing area:

  • "Les Portes du Soleil" 12 ski resorts connected between France and Switzerland. 308 ski slopes.

  • See the slopes map

  • Highest point: 2466m altitude.

Accommodation recommendation: Résidence Pierre et Vacances Premium L'Amara.

  • Design decoration

  • Balcony view of the Morzine valley

  • Heated pool, sauna and jaccuzzi

  • 100m from the slopes

  • 300m from the heart of the resort

Restaurants recommended:

  • La Pomme de Pin: pizza, salad and more at the foot of the slopes (try the apple pie).

  • Le Yeti: Savoyard specialties or more traditional dishes for a change. Several vegetarian options.

  • La Folie Douce: to party at the foot of the slopes at any time of day.

👉 My opinion: Avoriaz is my favorite resort. The fact that it's a pedestrian resort adds a lot of magic. You can do everything on foot, from the many shops to restaurants and places to have a drink.
There are plenty of slopes, suitable for all levels.
